Affinity Diagram

E-mail Print PDF

What?

Affinity Diagram also known as KT method, is a planning tool and was created by Japanese anthropologist Jiro Kawakita in the 1960s.
It starts with brainstorming to generate as many ideas as possible to achieve a particular goal or determine all possible ways to solve a problem.
The next step is to group the ideas under natural heads like Man, Machine, Maintenance, Suppliers, Environment etc

Why?

1.    It helps to organize large number of ideas into natural groupings
2.    It helps to stimulate innovative and creative ideas

When?

1.    After Brainstorming
2.    When there are too many ideas
3.    When the goal or problem is too complex
4.    Before identifying a suitable Lean or Six Sigma project which is neither too macro nor too micro
