How to Make Eyeliner Last Longer & Not Run

E-mail Print PDF

When applied correctly, eyeliner can transform your eyes into smoky and seductive charms or simply enhance your natural sparkle with a subtle application. Eyeliner that is made from wax or oils tends to melt with body heat after a few hours, leaving you with smudged or running eyes. Applying eyeshadow powder to your eyeliner ensures it will better adhere to your eye and last longer. This procedure ensures your eye-enhancing liner will last as long as you need it to.

Things You'll Need

Tissue
Concealer
Translucent powder
Cotton swab
Eyeshadow brush
Dark eyeshadow

Instructions

1. Prepare your eyelids for eyeliner application by cleaning them. Apply a dry tissue to each eyelid. Use light pressure to remove any oils that could keep cosmetics from adhering to your skin.

2. Apply concealer to the skin of the eyelids, leaving a space for the eyeliner along the edge of each lid. The eyeliner will be less likely to smear if it is allowed to adhere to bare skin. Gently pat the concealer with your fingertips to blend it in with your skin. Dab a cotton swab into translucent powder and apply a thin layer over the concealer to allow it to set.

3. Select an eyeliner that is right for you. Liquid liners have greater staying power than pencil and gel liners, which give you softer lines. Waterproof eyeliners are also available.

4. Apply eyeliner to the skin that has been kept free of all other makeup, directly above your lashes. The color can be worked in along the lashes and around their roots until you achieve a solid line of eyeliner. Avoid lining the inner lids, which can lead to infection.

5. Select a shade of eyeshadow that matches or closely complements your eyeliner. Collect the eyeshadow powder on a small brush. Gently press the brush over the eyeliner with a sweeping motion. Applying the eyeshadow powder directly over the eyeliner will help it stay in place. Use the brush to blend the eyeshadow for a smoky look or leave a sharper line between the eyeliner and concealer.
