How to Make a Basket Out of Yarn

E-mail Print PDF

If you use baskets frequently to hold your personal items, you may grow tired of using the basic, plain reed baskets that you can buy from a department store. One alternative is to make your own out of other materials. For example, make a whimsical yarn basket using standard basketry reeds and colorful yarn. You can even make use of colorful scrap yarn that you might have left over from some of your other craft projects.

Things You'll Need
Basketry reeds
Shears
Bucket
Yarn
Scissors
Yarn needle, large

Instructions

1 Cut 12 basketry reeds with shears to measure 18 inches in length.

2 Fill a bucket with hot water, then soak the reeds in the hot water for two hours.

3 Lay six of the reeds vertically onto a flat surface, spacing the reeds 1/4 inch apart.

4 Weave the remaining six reeds back and forth horizontally through the vertical reeds to create a woven patch in the middle.

5 Bend the long ends of the reeds upright. This will be the base of the yarn basket.

6 Thread yarn into a yarn needle and weave the yarn back and forth around the upright reeds. As you weave, cinch the yarn down with your fingers to keep the weaving tight. Knot the yarn onto itself once you are 2 inches from the top of the basket.

7 Fold the 2-inch tops of the reeds over inside the basket and tuck the reeds into the weaving. Allow the yarn basket to air dry for two hours before use.

Tips & Warnings
* Select different colors of yarn to create a multicolored basket.

* Keep sharp shears and scissors away from children.
