Rayon is a fiber which is manufactured with a combination of wood pulp cellulose, cotton and other regenerated vegetable matter. Rayon is used to make textiles and yarn, and is often combined with other fibers to make yarns with a variety of different fibers. Knit with yarn fashioned of rayon much the same way you would knit with any yarn.
Things You'll Need
Rayon yarn
Knitting needles
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Instructions
Casting On
1 Hold one of the knitting needles so that its point faces your left.
2 Unwind roughly 2 feet of yarn from the skein or ball.
3 Pinch the middle of those 2 feet, and fashion a slipknot at that point.
4 Slide the slipknot over the needle and loosely tighten it.
5 Slide the second needle into the loop behind the first needle. Guide the loose yarn attached to the skein or ball between the needles and around the second needle.
6 Use the tip of the second needle to guide the yarn forward, through the slip knot. You should now have a loop on each needle.
7 Guide the loop on the second needle back onto the first, and repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have the desired width of the project on the first needle.
Knitting
1 Slide the second needle through the loop nearest the tip of the first.
2 Guide the loose yarn counterclockwise around the second needle. Use the tip of the second needle to pull this yarn through the loop. This fashions another loop which is now on the second needle.
3 Repeat step 2 for each loop remaining on the first needle, until each of the new loops is transferred onto the second needle. When no more loops remain, you have created a new row.
4 Repeat to create as many rows as desired to fashion the length of the project.
5 Trim any excess yarn away after completing the final row, leaving a tail of roughly 12 to 18 inches.
Binding Off
1 Knit two stitches as normal on the first two loops of the last row.
2 Push the second needle through the first loop.
3 Guide the first loop over the second, sliding it off the needle so that it connects to the second loop. Knit another stitch on the subsequent loop of the last row.
4 Repeat step 3 until each loop has been guided and attached to its following loop. This prevents the knitting from unraveling.
5 Slide the bind-off row off of the needles. Thread the remaining loose yarn (called a tail) through the tapestry needle, and weave it back through the knitted loops.
Tips & Warnings
Because it is made of plant fibers, yarn with a high rayon content may quickly absorb water. Take this into account when selecting rayon yarns for projects.
